This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to meloxicam, or another NSAID drug, including aspirin, or rizatriptan, or if you have heart disease, angina, blood vessel problems (including ischemic bowel disease, peripheral vascular disease), kidney disease (patients on dialysis), uncontrolled high blood pressure, hemiplegic or basilar migraines, or a history of heart attack, stroke, or transient ischemic attack (TIA). Do not use it right before or after a heart surgery, called coronary artery bypass graft (CABG).How to Use This Medicine:
Tablet
- Your doctor will tell you how much medicine to use. Do not use more than directed. Use this medicine only when you have a migraine.
- Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush, divide, or chew it.
- This medicine should come with a Medication Guide. Ask your pharmacist for a copy if you do not have one.
- Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
Drugs and Foods to Avoid:
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
- Do not use this medicine if you have taken another triptan or ergot medicine for a migraine in the past 24 hours (including almotriptan, dihydroergotamine, eletriptan, ergotamine, frovatriptan, methysergide, naratriptan, sumatriptan, or zolmitriptan).
- Do not use this medicine if you have used an MAO inhibitor (MAOI) within the past 2 weeks. Do not use this medicine if you are using propranolol.
- Do not use any other NSAID medicine (including aspirin, diflunisal, salsalate) unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
- Some medicines can affect how meloxicam/rizatriptan works. Tell your doctor if you are using any of the following:
- Amiodarone, cyclosporine, fluconazole, lithium, methotrexate, pemetrexed
- Blood pressure medicine (including ACE inhibitors, ARBs, beta blockers)
- Blood thinner (including warfarin)
- Diuretic (water pill)
- Medicine to treat depression (including SNRIs, SSRIs, TCAs)
Warnings While Using This Medicine:
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not use this medicine during the later part of a pregnancy unless your doctor tells you it is okay.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, heart failure, heart rhythm problems, asthma, bleeding problems, high blood pressure, or a history of ulcers or other stomach problems. Tell your doctor if you smoke or drink alcohol regularly.
- This medicine may cause the following problems:
- Increased risk of heart rhythm problems, blood clots, heart attack, stroke, or heart failure
- Stomach or bowel problems, including bleeding, ulcers, or perforation
- Liver problems
- High blood pressure
- Kidney problems
- Serious skin reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, exfoliative dermatitis, toxic epidermal necrolysis, fixed drug eruption (FDE), and generalized bullous fixed drug eruption (GBFDE)
- Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS)
- Serotonin syndrome (when used with certain other medicines)
- This medicine may cause a delay in ovulation for women and may decrease sperm count in men, which can affect their ability to have children. If you plan to have children, talk with your doctor before using this medicine.
- This medicine may make you dizzy, drowsy, or weak. Do not drive or do anything that could be dangerous until you know how this medicine affects you.
- Your headaches may become worse if you use headache medicine for 10 or more days per month. Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse.
- Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.
- Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.
Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:
Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:
- Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
- Anxiety, restlessness, fever, muscle spasms, twitching, diarrhea, seeing or hearing things that are not there
- Blistering, peeling, red skin rash
- Change in how much or how often you urinate, painful urination
- Chest pain that may spread to your arms, jaw, back, or neck, unusual sweating, faintness
- Dark urine or pale stools, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain, yellow skin or eyes
- Fast, slow, pounding, or uneven heartbeat
- Numbness or weakness on one side of your body, problems with vision, speech, or walking
- Rapid weight gain, swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet
- Severe stomach pain, vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds, bloody or black, tarry stools
- Tightness or discomfort in your chest, neck, or jaw
- Trouble breathing, coughing up blood
- Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness
If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:
- Change or loss of taste
- Sleepiness
